How do I pick out a dollhouse? This is a question we are often asked in my shop. First I try to find out what they think they might like? Cottage, Mansion, Castle, Bungalow or even a room box or store. Then they usually open up a bit and I get some idea as to what they might like. Next question, Are they hard to build? Answer- yes and no!! I always try to start off with finding out if the person is into crafts. If so, the job of building a dollhouse is somewhat easier. If not, I ask if they are good at reading and following directions. This is a must!! If they don't want to spend the time reading the directions or following them, the job just got extremely harder. If on the other hand, they tell me that they have been building things since they were young, I get an idea that they might like a challenge. This is an excellent start if you want to build and customize your dollhouse to your taste. Next, of course, is price. In Miniatures, as in almost everything else, you get what you pay for. Buy a cheap kit and unless you put a lot of time, effort and some money into it, it will still be a cheap kit, and maybe a bit disappointing to you and not what you dreamt of. Now, if you are crafty and willing to take the time and dream a little, you can turn a small, inexpensive kit into a real gem. It's all in what YOU are willing to invest.
